WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

What are essential oils and what are they used for?

Although essential oils have been used in aromatherapy for years as a form of alternative medicine, their popularity in beauty products is continually on the rise due to their wellbeing benefits. Essential oils are liquid extracts of plants which are created through steaming or cold pressing to get their fragrance. There are various essential oils used in beauty products, which are used for their different health and skin benefits as well as their natural fragrances. The best way to use essential oils is to look at the wellness benefits of different oils and choose beauty products that contain these. Essential oils are not only good for keeping your skin healthy, but they can positively affect your mood and environment.

How does this happen?

Two features of essential oils which enables them to passively diffuse the cell membrane are; the small molecular size and the lipid solubility. This allows them to work at cellular level to produce homeostasis by managing both physical and mental stressors.

What essential oils do we use in our products?

Each of our products contain carefully selected essential oils which are chosen for their individual wellness benefits.. Simply go to 'Shop' and read the item description for the product range you're interested in to help you choose the perfect one for you. Keep reading below to hear why we use it in our botanical Healing Balm.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender oil is a powerful antioxidant used to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections by helping to neutralise free radicals from harsh chemicals/pollutants in the environment and repairing damage from UV rays. Lavender is really effective at healing the skin because it contains transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), a constituent that works at a molecular level to regenerate new skin cells

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense oil contain terepenes and boswellic acids which are strongly anti-inflammatory and protective over healthy cells. It’s thought to reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting the action of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that releases leukotrienes (compounds that generate inflammation in the body). Frankincense benefits include the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, defence mechanisms against bacteria, reduce the appearance of scars and acne and treat wounds. It may also be beneficial for fading stretch marks, surgery scars or marks associated with pregnancy, and healing dry or cracked skin. Frankincense oil reduces redness and skin irritation, while also producing a more even skin tone. Studies suggest that it's the pentacylcic triterpene (steroid-like) structure of frankincense oil that contributes to its soothing effect on irritated skin.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium boosts skin appearance and really enhances the way your skin looks and feels. Geranium is a naturally speeds up the healing of wounds and helps healthy new skin cells to regenerate more quickly - it often is used to treat scar tissue and the dark spots and marks left by acne and sunburn. An antiseptic and anti-oxidant, it helps to unblock pores and restore the natural sebum balance on the skins surface, helping your skin to breathe. That's why this oil is an ideal ingredient in balms, cleaners and moisturisers like ours.

Orange Essential Oil

Orange oil has the ability to naturally stimulate the strength and resilience of the immune system and eliminate airborne bacteria. It has an uplifting aroma which simultaneously relaxes and restores calmness helping reduce the pulse rate and alleviate stress and anxieties. Used topically, orange essential oil is beneficial for maintaining the health, appearance, and texture of skin by promoting clarity, radiance, smoothness, thereby reducing the signs of acne and other uncomfortable skin conditions. The main chemical constituents of orange oil are limonene, a-Pinene, geraniol and citronella which exhibit the following activity; anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, carminative, analgesic, anti-biotic, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-septic. The balm nourishes skin, soothes dryness and irritation, eliminate harmful bacteria and enhance collagen production. Its antimicrobial properties make it ideal for application to a cut, bite, abrasion, boil, eruption, or any wound that may potentially become septic, as it prevents bacterial growth and infection.

While you can easily buy these oils and add them to your products you use, it is best to find a product that combines them in smart ways with complementary botanicals to benefit from the synergistic impact of the blend. We use frankincense oil along with more than forty natural essential oils, plant and herb extracts to give you everyday products that contain everything you need for a healthy mind and body.
